A-Level (Advanced Level) is a further qualification after GCSE/IGCSE or GCE O-Level. A-Level qualification is a 2-year educational program in the UK for candidates at 16 to 19 years of age or at the year 12 and 13 of candidates’ school year. The qualification is a requirement for a continuation to a University. 

A-level qualification separates into two levels 

1. AS-Level (Advanced Subsidiary) is for year 12 or the first year of A-Level
2. A2-Level (Advanced Level) is for year 13 or the second year of A-Level. It is sometimes referred to as A-Level itself. 

Students can also choose to study either a full A-Level course or AS-Level (half course and receive an AS qualification, assuming students passed the exam. Note that AS itself is not an A-Level qualification). For a smooth transition and continuation, it is best for students to plan or have some ideas of what students want to major in the University and the A-Level subjects that are prerequisite for that major. 

An A-Level course is equivalent to 2 credits for the subject and AS-Level is equivalent to 1 credit. A total of 6 credits is required to issue a diploma. 

A-level subjects are separated into 4 Categories 

Group 1: Mathematics and Science 

Group 2: Languages 

Group 3: Arts and Humanities 

Group 4: Global Perspectives 

The A-Level grading system will be measured for each individual subject. There is no grade point average. The grading scale for A-Level is ranged from A*-E as A* is the highest grade and AS-Level ranged from A-E. While E is still a passing grade, many universities, in general, are looking for at least a C or higher. 

The examination boards offer 2 A-Level exam sessions per year, May/June and Oct/Nov. There are 4 major examination boards; CIE, Edexcel, AQA, and OCR. Normally, the international schools with the British curriculum are qualified to hold the examination for their students and some are certified to open for the private candidates (students from other school)
